The President of the Municipal Community of Karavas, Zacharias Souris, is making an open complaint about the sloppiness and delay of the Municipality of Kythera, on the occasion of the images of abandonment that Platia Ammos presents, 18 days after the severe wave of bad weather.
As Mr.Souris points out, while from the first moment there was immediate mobilization for the opening of the main road and the removal of huge rocks, the continuation was disappointing. Large quantities of sand and debris remain to this day on the pavements and the seafront.
At the centre of the President's criticism is the responsible Deputy Mayor, who allegedly failed to meet his commitment to immediately send a special cleaning machine. What is most worrying, according to Mr. Souris, is that despite the official, written decision (since April 2) that there is a serious risk to public safety, the state mechanism remains absent, leaving residents justifiably indignant.
The following is the Press Release of the President of the Municipal Community of Karavas:
PRESS RELEASE The President of the Municipal Community of Karavas
Ammos Square: We opened the road the same day, but 18 days later, the rehabilitation is pending.
The recent bad weather that hit Ammos Square was particularly intense, exceeding in intensity even the corresponding phenomenon of February 2019 and causing extensive damage to the road network within the settlement and the entire coastal front.
From the very first moment, as President of the Municipal Community, I called for the immediate activation of the mechanism. On the same day of the disaster, an immediate operation was carried out to restore traffic and remove a large volume of stones, weighing up to half a tonne each, from the jetty, with interventions and the use of heavy equipment, in order to ensure basic access and prevent further damage.
The road was opened and initial clearing work was carried out. However, a significant amount of sand remained on the sides of the main road and along the entire pavement as the machine operated was not suitable for its complete removal.
The responsible Deputy Mayor was present, who pledged to send a smaller machine within two days to complete the cleaning of the entire beachfront. This commitment did not materialise. From day to day, from one day to the next to the next, we arrived today, 4/21/2026, after eighteen (18) full days, without having completed the cleaning of the entire settlement, the beachfront and the sidewalks.
The indignation of the residents is entirely justified. The picture that remains reflects a lack of organisation and sloppy coordination of the response, while landslide materials are still lying on the road network in various parts of the Community.
At the same time, already from 02/04/2026 the Decision of the President of the Municipal Community of Karavas A.P.1271/02-04-2026 was issued, in which an immediate and serious danger to public safety was established in writing and the competent services of the Municipality of Kythera were requested without any delay to take all necessary measures for restoration.
Despite the above institutional and written intervention, to date the required restoration has not been completed. The completion of the clean-up and full restoration of the damage to the entire road network within the settlement and the entire coastal front remains pending.
THE PRESIDENT OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF KARAVA ZACHARIAS I. SURIS
