The great performer Antonis Kalogiannis passed away at the age of 81. The news of his death became known after his relatives posted the news on a social networking platform.
Born in 1940 in Kaisariani, Antonis Kalogiannis sang primarily about love. Kalogiannis' long journey in Greek song spans more than 40 years. He collaborated with leading Greek composers (Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarchakos, Dimos Moutsis, Mimi Plessa, Stavros Kougioumtzis, Ilias Andriopoulos, Mario Tokas, etc.).a.) but also poets and lyricists (Yannis Ritsos, George Seferis, Manolis Anagnostakis, T. Livaditis, D. Christodoulou, Lefteris Papadopoulos, etc.)
He first took to the stage in 1966. In the same year he was discovered by Mikis Theodorakis and gave his first concerts in the then Soviet Union and then in Greece. During the dictatorship of the Colonels in 1967, he went abroad with Maria Farantouri and formed a folk orchestra, with which they gave concerts of a purely political nature, thus contributing to the struggle against the Junta.
In 1970 Mikis Theodorakis was released from prison and together they gave more than 500 concerts in Europe, America and Australia, making known the political situation that prevailed in our country at that time. In 1972 Antonis Kalogiannis returned to Greece and sang in several bouquets in Plaka.
Special moments in his career are the recording of the «Spiritual March» by Angelos Sikelianos and the «State of Siege» in 1970, together with Maria Farantouri, as well as «Sun and Time / Averoff's Surface» in 1975.
The 1980s began with an album (Mimis Plessas - Dimitris Christodoulou ’Songs of the Neighbourhood«/1980), which probably closed the previous decade, because, in fact, with his next album (»Today«/1981), Antonis Kalogiannis made his turn to love songs, where he established himself as a love singer. With the golden (50.000 sales) »Σημερινά« by Spyros Papavasiliou and Lakis Teazis, Kalogiannis opened the most commercial decade of his career with a song - a big hit, »Oμορfi μου Katerina«, which was followed in the following years by other big hits, where the title referred to female names.
After these great successes, Antonis Kalogiannis’ discography continued until almost the end of the '90s, when his last studio album was released in 1997.
