Efstratios Harhalakis: Announced new desalination plants

«Funny - ridiculous threats do NOT touch us»

In an important development for the water supply in the Municipality of Kythera, the Mayor Efstratios Harhalakis announced today the forthcoming signature of a contract for the supply and installation of new desalination plants in the regions of Capsule, Paleopolis and Antikythera, with a total budget of €1.860.000.

Project details

The project is funded by the “Antonis Tritsis” programme and includes:

  1. Kapsali: Desalination unit with a daily capacity of 300 cubic metres, which “will serve the village of Kapsali with the possibility of extending the network to Kalamos and from there to Livadi.”
  2. Palaeopolis: A similar unit that “will serve the wider area of Avlemonas - Paleopolis”, with the prospect of solving the water supply problem.
  3. Antikythera: Smaller desalination plant of 100 cubic metres per day.
  4. Additional Facilities: Five autonomous drinking water production units in different locations in the Municipality.

Project Timeline and Phases

The initial design of the project started in 2021 and was included in the programme in 2022. The electronic tender took place in November 2023, with TEMAK SA as the only participating company. “The contract will be signed in September with a completion horizon of 180 days. Therefore, the units will be fully operational next summer.”

Importance of the project

«And with this project we are proving that projects are only done in proper planning and method. This is the only way funding comes, neither with irony, nor with insults, nor with funny/ridiculous threats that do NOT touch us» says Mr. Harchalakis in a post. The project is expected to permanently solve the water supply problems in critical areas of the Municipality of Kythera, significantly improving the quality of life of the residents and the economic development of the area. The mayor stresses the need for “continued funding and support for such initiatives,” as they are critical to the sustainable development of the area.
