The brutal murder of Alexis
Saturday 6 December 2008: Student, Alexis Grigoropoulos, he and his friends stroll through the streets of Exarchia and celebrate the birthday of a friend. Shortly after 21:00, at the junction of the streets Messolonghi and Baltic Sea, ...the group argues with two policemen. The patrol car, which the special guards were in, Epaminondas Korkoneas and Vassilis Saraliotis, is removed from the scene and informs the GADA center about the incident. A few minutes later they return and during the tension with a group of young people, Korkoneas raises his service pistol and shoots twice. Alexis Grigoropoulos falls dead with a bullet in the chest.
Riots erupted immediately after the death of the 15-year-old student. In all the major Greek cities, such as Athens, the Thessaloniki, the Piraeus, the Patras, the Heraklion, the Larissa, the Ioannina, the Chania, the Komotini, the Volos, the Rhodes, the Mytilene, the Chios, the Corfu and the Agrinio mobilisations were generalised.
