Eleven specialized doctors and nine hours of surgery gave the boy, who had lost his hand a few days earlier in a tractor accident, his hand back.
This is the first successful shoulder-level reattachment of a limb in a child in Greece. The 11-year-old, following a lengthy surgery, is in stable condition in the hospital's ICU «Agia Sofia» Children's School».
The history
It all started when the 11-year-old approached the tractor, which was running while his father was spraying; and for reasons still unknown, his hand got caught in the shaft, resulting in his arm being severed at the shoulder. The child was initially taken to Zakynthos Hospital, but it was deemed necessary to transfer him to the Children’s Hospital.
In a statement, the administration of the Children’s Hospital notes that the young patient arrived by ambulance at our hospital at 4:30 p.m. that same day and was in good overall condition.
The amputated limb was transported in accordance with standard procedure. At 17:00, the patient was admitted to the Operating Room at the General Hospital of Athens «AGIA SOPHIA,» where he underwent surgical reattachment of the right upper limb at the level of the upper third of the right humerus. The procedure was successfully completed at 2:00 a.m. on February 13, 2022.
