With two «green» interventions will soon change the traffic map and the image of the city of Chania as the economic committee of the municipality lit the green light for the conduct of two major tenders by approving the technical specifications and conditions for their conduct.
«Green» route
One tender concerns the development of a «green» route and a cycle path, on the road axis of Chatzimichali Yannari, Skalidi and Pireos streets in the city centre of Chania.
According to the technical report of the project presented by RES, in the framework of the execution of this project will be the redevelopment of the axis of Chatzimichali Yannari, Skalidi and Piraeus streets starting south of the Municipal Market with the main objective of creating capable sidewalks for the unobstructed passage of pedestrians and people with disabilities and the engraving bicycle drive shaft, which complements the existing network of cycle paths in the old town and Piraeus Street. In addition, existing planting is reinforced with new trees where feasible and where this does not impede the safe and unobstructed passage of pedestrians, and a new street lighting network is constructed.
The project has a budget of €2.2 million.
Electrification in the city
The second tender concerns the supply of electric vehicles for the needs of the municipality. The technical specifications and conditions were approved by the financial committee with the project budget reaching 4.5 million euros.
The tender will be used to supply five electric buses with 33 seats each and with specifications for serving people with disabilities. .
The buses will be used for the needs of municipal transport in order to implement the plan to link regional municipal parking areas with the city centre.
Four passenger vehicles for the needs of the municipality's services, one electric road and pavement cleaning vehicle, while the supply - installation and operation will be carried out vehicle charging stations.
According to the technical report for the tender presented by RES-MPA, the supply of ten vehicles and two charging stations will constitute the first essential step for the promotion of electromobility in the municipality.
As the report states, «electromobility presents significant benefits for the municipality in many areas, for all its citizens and visitors, namely:
- It helps to reduce air pollution.
- It helps to reduce noise pollution.
- It leads to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
- It contributes to more efficient use of energy.».
The technical report is «accompanied» by evidence on the climate impact of fossil fuel emissions that climate change mitigation can be reduced by the use of vehicles powered by electricity.
