The dialogue of the progressive forces is ongoing with today's conference on insularity being another opportunity for the discussion of the political leaders. At 12.20 pm, SYRIZA PS president S. Famellos, New Left president Alexis Haritsis and Kosmos secretary Petros Kokkalis will be at the same table. The debate will be moderated by Luka Katseli, Professor at the University of Athens and former minister. The Mayor of Athens, Harris Doukas, will address the audience, while the first round of discussions will be attended by PASOK's Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Yannis Polychronakos.
The discussion of the political leaders is expected with particular interest as it is the second time they will meet after Serafio, which shows that the progressive area is looking for points of agreement and in this context the processes are continuing. «The second great opportunity we have today is that we can have a discussion at the level of progressive party leaders so that we can formulate the programmatic basis for a unified progressive response.» Socrates Famellos said as he arrived at the conference venue.
The conference will start shortly before 9 am with the greetings of representatives of the Institutes, the Region of North Cyprus and the Region of Greece. Aegean Region and the Municipality of Mytilene and will continue with the speeches of professors, scientists and representatives of institutions.
In the first cycle at 10.15 on «Sustainable Development: quality versus quantity», moderated by Prof. Γ. Mylopoulos. Participating in this debate will be the economist, PASOK's head of the shipping and island policy section, Yannis Polychronakos.
At 11.40 he will speak MEP and vice-president of the Left Group in the European Parliament - The Left, Costas Arvanitis.
At 12.05 will be addressed by the Mayor of Athens and Professor of Energy and Environmental Policy, Harry Dukas.
The political leaders will speak in the second round of debates which will start immediately afterwards, at 12.20, and will last for one hour. This will be followed by questions and interventions.
The third cycle of the programme will start at 14.15 on «Social cohesion, sustainability and participation: public goods and values» and will be moderated by the historian, director of the N. Poulantzas Institute, Maria Repoussi.
In the fourth cycle at 15.25 on «Resilient Islands: Islands with a present but uncertain future?» The moderator will be Dr. Dr. University of the Aegean, Angeliki Mitropoulou.
In the fifth round starting at 16.35, representatives of local government and scientists will speak on «Local government and island governance for a humane present and a better future». The moderator will be Γ. Spilanis, Om. Professor Pan. Aegean, Director of the Laboratory of Local and Island Development.
The debate will conclude with contributions from stakeholders and citizens and the conclusions of the consultation at 18.30. The conference is co-organized by the Institute of Policy Alternatives ENA, the Institute for Research and Policy Strategy - INERPOST and the Nikos Poulantzas Institute in cooperation with the Laboratory of Local and Island Development of the University of the Aegean.
