The day after is tinged with the colors of sorrow a horrific shipwreck which took place shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5, east of the port of Diakofto, 1 nautical mile east of the Makrykythira Bridge.
A sailboat, which, according to the information available so far, was carrying 95 people, struck the rocks and sank.
An additional vessel (Aqua Jewel), a Navy helicopter, officials from the relevant Port Authority, police and fire department personnel, as well as volunteer rescuers; an offshore vessel from the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard’s Special Missions Unit, and a team from the Underwater Missions Unit.
The survivors, the missing
Since the rescue operation is still underway, this information is provided subject to change until it has been verified.
According to the information available so far, there were approximately 95 people of Afghan origin on board the vessel. Of these, 69 have been rescued and taken to the school in Frilingianika. Forty-four are men, seven are women, and there are also 18 minors. In addition, 11 people have been taken to the hospital for treatment. The rest are missing.
