This unique island has inspired filmmakers, lyricists, and composers, and is an attractive destination for those who love authentic travel experiences. For two days, Evlampia Revi and Giorgos Kourdis will introduce us to this island of unique beauty, its hospitable residents, and the challenges they face.
We explore the hidden corners of the area and travel to the islet of Chytra to watch the harvest of the amaranth flower, known by its Venetian name, Sempreviva. It’s a difficult and dangerous undertaking, as one must climb to the top of the rocky islet.
We’re hiking through a network of trails of exceptional beauty, with the help of a Dutchman who has lived on the island permanently for the past 22 years. He is the man who helped establish Kythira as one of the Mediterranean’s top hiking destinations.
We are watching the process of making traditional Kythira rusks at an old olive mill that has been converted into a bakery.
We hear the locals’ complaints about the problematic ferry service. In the winter, the island on the unprofitable route was left without a ferry for nearly two months, and one of the biggest problems faced by permanent residents was a shortage of medication. Air service is also problematic, as —even though Kythira was one of the first islands to have an airport—it cannot accommodate all flights due to the short length of the runway. Residents and local organizations are calling for its extension by 500 meters.
