Joint petition by residents of the Nea Salamina area

Local residents have reacted strongly to the plans for urban expansion in the Nea Salamina area. This stems from the municipality’s decision to designate a city block for «Wholesale Warehouses»—with all that this entails. Literally right next to homes and schools, an 18-stremma (17,887 square meters) building block designated for wholesale warehouses!

Really… do we actually have businesses on the island that need 18 stremmata of storage space? But that’s not our main concern… it’s the serious deterioration of the entire area.

It is the Municipality’s obligation to recognize that the quality of life, the risks, and even the value of the plots and properties that this unacceptable policy decision will create must be addressed, and its implementation must be brought into line with the existing zoning plan for the area. Citizens’ indifference to serious issues is something we constantly encounter.
And most of the time, it's … too late …

We must not let what they are planning in Nea Salamina happen. It is absurd and unacceptable.

REGARDING THE FUTURE EXPANSION OF THE MUNICIPALITY'S PLAN
SALAMINA, RESIDENT OF:
URBAN PLANNING UNIT: 7, Cadastral Parcel: 732,
SECTOR C, FOUTOULI-VRETTO AREA
LAND USE: WHOLESALE TRADE

We are filing an objection during the first public notice period for the Urban Planning Study for the area
URBAN PLANNING UNIT A (RESIDENTIAL) OF THE MUNICIPAL UNIT
SALAMINA OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF SALAMINA, pursuant to Article 3, paragraph 1, of Legislative Decree No. 17-7-23
and specifically with regard to the impact on our properties, because:
According to existing land-use regulations, the area within the city plan—which borders Lot 732 (of the future expansion), has been developed as a General and Purely Residential zone, with numerous (6) daycare centers and preschools, elementary schools, and middle schools, newly built single-family homes and apartment buildings.
The wholesale trade zoning designation, which is designated for Lot 732 of the future expansion, permits only wholesale trade facilities on a 17,880-square-meter site. .
We will briefly outline the problems and risks that residents will face...
Problems that often have to do with residents' health. .
Before we discuss the problems, we would like to mention what the land use designation allows (WHOLESALE WAREHOUSES).
1) Trade show facilities
2) Storage buildings and lots
3) Buildings—parking lots,
4) Gas Stations and LPG Stations (Storage)
5) As well as offices, restaurants, and cafeterias that will serve exclusively the Warehouses

As for the risks …
A) We all realize that the implementation of the future expansion plan will inevitably lead to a decline in the quality of life in the area, and not only that …
* Pollutants resulting from the presence of warehouses may include carbon monoxide
carbon, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides in loading areas ..
* Pollution from heavy vehicles, forklifts, and diesel-powered trucks, which will now be operating in areas surrounded by residential homes and school buildings)
* High noise levels – a nuisance...
* Groundwater contamination, soil contamination
pollution and, of course, the destruction of its natural vegetation
region….
B) The risks posed by the hundreds of types of storage facilities and fuels (toxic mold, airborne hazardous microparticles, etc.)
* The risk of serious accidents caused by heavy vehicles traveling just a few meters from the warehouses—where children from the local schools are playing – kindergartens, and residents….
C) Another environmental burden on the area is the nuisance …
* Due to the disruption caused to residents and schools when heavy vehicles travel through residential areas and near school buildings
D) A decline in the assessed values of our properties. In one of the best areas on our island...
* Who would invest in the face of such a decline?;
E) We will focus in particular on the risks associated with the storage of liquid fuels and
LPG …
* The law allows it, so... Who can assure us that they won't move in??;

The immediate amendment of the building block’s land use designation (WHOLESALE WAREHOUSES) and its harmonization with the rest of the area’s plan that you have submitted...
