Athina Linou: 1 in 50,000 cases of thrombosis in younger women

What the professor of epidemiology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens recommended regarding the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

To prefer vaccines from other companies rather than those from AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, recommended Athena Linos, professor of epidemiology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Ms. Linos confirmed the cases of thrombosis caused by these specific preparations and asked younger women, as well as men, to choose other companies' products as their first choice.

In the event that there have been defective vaccine batches, Ms. Linou clarified that, although this has been discussed, no such case has arisen. «AstraZeneca and Johnson&Johnson, however, have been shown to cause increased risk in women under 50 and, more rarely, in men,» he emphasized.

Regarding the cases of thrombosis from the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, he emphasized that «in older people and men, it is 1-2 in 1 million vaccinations. In younger women, it is 1 in 50,000., according to a Guardian article with data from England.

However, the professor of epidemiology clarified that «if it is a person who is exposed on a daily basis and has no choice of vaccine, must be vaccinated», even with these two preparations.

«I think children should be vaccinated.»

With regard to vaccination of children over 12 years of age, Athena Linou stated that everything we know comes from research conducted in the US, with Pfizer and Moderna. As she said, vaccination is progressing in this country, and in fact she herself voted in favor of. «I think children should be vaccinated.» she noted, revealing that some of her own grandchildren living in the US had been asked to participate in research from the ages of 6 to 12. «Research is being conducted at major universities because children are difficult to maintain distances and measures», he estimated.

Finally, when asked about the possibility of needing and third installment coronavirus vaccine, said that «investigations have not been completed to see if third doses will be needed. This has been stated by the pharmaceutical companies.
