Anemone the Coronary

A. coronaria is the ancestor of all cultivated Anemone varieties and one of the seven species of the genus found in Greece. (Sfikas 2001) It blooms in midwinter in areas exposed to strong winds, which is why the ancient Greeks gave it this name. On Kythira, the pink and purple ones bloom first, around November, followed by the red ones starting in January. This year, the blooming cycle was apparently disrupted by the unusually warm days in November, and we found quite a few red ones alongside the pink and purple ones.
