The newspaper «Kythiraika» In a letter to Kythera.News, he responds to the barbs from City Councilmember A. Mariatos, who accused the publication’s editor of «stoked hatred» by publishing the report on the beating of the chairman of the Local Property Authority. In a statement, the newspaper emphasizes that it merely reported the news, confirmed by three sources, without comment. At the same time, it expresses disappointment over the «exploitation» of the case and notes that Mr. Mariatos, while attacking the newspaper, did not share his statement with it. The following is the letter from publisher Emmanouil Kalligeros:
«Kythiraika» NEWSPAPER»
Statement Regarding a Published Announcement.
In a recent post, Mr. A. Mariatos skillfully used a completely unrelated topic (the Kythira Urban Planning Scheme) to attack the newspaper’s publisher, insisting that we allegedly «escalated the hatred» by posting about the «beating» of the president of the Local Council, putting the word in quotation marks. Is he, I wonder, aware of the findings of the preliminary investigation and the ongoing inquiry? Or did he speak with the person who reported the beating, who certainly owes the public an explanation for what he alleged? We published this allegation—and only this allegation, without any commentary—as a news story, which was confirmed to us by three people. After all, that is our job.
While we await the findings of the authorities investigating the matter, we can assure you that, both legally and morally, we have nothing to «apologize» for. It is true that these rumors spread easily, deliberately, and, likely, with specific motives. And this also reflects the spirit of the times. Well, he wrote what he wrote and spread his own share of hatred. Why did he exclude from the recipients of his statement the very newspaper he mentions and accuses? Honestly, one can feel nothing but disappointment and sadness—both, of course, regarding the tragic turn of events and the subsequent attempt to exploit it. And we will not be taking any further action regarding the above.
