Alexis Tsipras: Resigned as a member of parliament for SYRIZA

Alexis Tsipras has resigned as a SYRIZA MP, as he made known in a post.

As it states: «After 16 years in Parliament, as a Member of Parliament, as a party leader, as leader of the opposition and as Prime Minister, I made a decision of conscience: to resign from the parliamentary office».

Here is the statement:

After 16 years in Parliament, as an MP, party leader, leader of the opposition and Prime Minister, I made a decision of conscience:

To resign as a Member of Parliament.

Shortly before the start of the new parliamentary session, I submitted my resignation to the President of the Parliament.

It was not an easy decision, nor was it an unprincipled one.

I am resigning because I cannot and do not want to retain the office of MP, with all the privileges it entails, when I feel that my participation, with the special treaty of the former Prime Minister, offers nothing of substance to those who trusted me.

Because I cannot and I do not want to participate formally in a Parliament, which is democratically stripped bare, mainly at the responsibility of the majority, unable to perform the role that the Constitution requires and the citizens demand.

But I am resigning as a SYRIZA MP, I am not resigning from political action.

I'm abandoning the safety of mountain chairs.
And I aspire to return to the hopeful insecurity of social action.

Not to lead from above, but to better listen to society and its needs.
Free from axioms, commitments and mechanisms that can no longer express it.

At a time when our country is in a dangerous impasse.
Economic, political, geostrategic, but above all moral.
Hope is needed.
Through actions, not just words.

The actions that prove that we are not all the same.
Actions, which are the only way to overcome the current deadlocks.

I don't believe in messiahs, nor in partisan lab constructs.
But I believe in the power of the people's movement fighting collectively for social justice.
I believe in the will and actions of the many.
With them, their needs and their hopes, I am determined to meet.

I want to address my comrades, all those who have walked with me to this point and shared our struggles, struggles, hopes and dreams.

We will not be rivals.
And maybe soon we will travel together again to more beautiful seas.

But above all, I want to address the great social majority that is suffocating:
The plundering of our country by a regime of widespread corruption that breeds inequality and injustice cannot continue any longer.
If those who have the responsibility of democratic opposition cannot put aside their self-interest to bring about change, then we must all become the change we expect.
To take the future into our own hands.
This is worth every effort and every struggle.
