Adele was named the best-selling female artist of the century in the UK, leaving behind Madonna, P!nk and Rihanna. The statistics were presented in view of National Album Day in the United Kingdom, which for the fourth time will be celebrated in October 2021 with this year's theme «Celebrating the Women of Music».
The announcement of the celebration, according to the Athens News Agency, reveals who are the female singers with the biggest selling albums since 2000, as well as the most commercial albums by female artists. The singer from London is at the top of the chart of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), and all three of her albums are in the top ten best-selling albums by female artists. Adele's second album, «21», with six million copies, tops the list of albums by female artists in the UK alone.
The top 10 women with the most album sales in the UK (2000-2021) are Adele, P!nk, Madonna, Rihanna, Dido, Amy Winehouse, Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. Meanwhile, the top 10 best-selling albums by female artists in the UK are Adele «21», Amy Winehouse «Back to Black», Adele «25», Leona Lewis «Spirit», Lady Gaga «Fame», Dido «No Angel», Dido «Life For Rent», Norah Jones «Come Away With Me», Adele «19» and Emeli Sandé «Our Version of Events».
National Album Day is jointly organised by the BPI - the UK's association of independent and major record labels that presents the Brit Awards and Mercury Prize) - and the Record Dealers' Association.
