Mitsotakis calls European champion mayor of Tilos and announcement from KEDE

Yesterday morning Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a phone conversation with the Maria Kamma-Aleiferis, mayor of Tilos and congratulated her on this great honor, which reflects well on the entire country.

A statement was also issued by the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece, referring to the success of Tilos, noting that Tilos has become a symbol of sustainability for all of Europe. .

Tilos, the little gem of the Aegean, achieved what seemed impossible to many: it has become a symbol of sustainability for all of Europe and raised the Greek flag to the highest throne of business innovation. On November 19, in Budapest, the island won not only First Prize in the category “Supporting the Sustainable Transition,” but also the top Grand Jury Award at the 2024 European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA).

Tilos: The small island that changed the map of Europe

«With “Just Go Zero Tilos,’ Tilos has drawn the world’s attention to the enchanting Greece, proving that even the most remote corner of our homeland can become a pioneer and inspire an entire continent when the hard work, hard work, and dedication—not only from local organizations but also from every resident. “Our island has demonstrated the power of unity and vision, giving everyone a reason to feel proud,” the municipality of Tilos emphasizes in a statement.
«With the pioneering “Just Go Zero Tilos” program,” he adds, “Tilos has set new standards in the circular economy, achieving: 100% of waste diverted from landfills, 93% of waste recycled, and the active participation of every resident, business, and school.”.

»This initiative didn't just change the island; it sent a powerful message throughout Europe: change is possible—we just have to dare to dream it and plan for it.".

Mayor Maria Kamma, in a statement she made upon receiving the award, emphasized that «this victory does not belong only to Tilos. It belongs to all Greeks who believe that we can change the world. It is proof that even the smallest island can leave its mark on history.» In deeply moving words, he praised the true heroes—the residents of Tilos—who believed in and worked to turn this vision into reality.

Expressing his gratitude to the Regional Governor of the South Aegean, George Hatzimarkos, and the CEO of Polygreen, Thanasis Polychronopoulos, he emphasized: «This award is a call for all of Greece to embrace sustainability. Our journey doesn’t end here—it has only just begun.».

At the Grand Jury Award ceremony, the European Commission described Tilos as a «beacon of sustainability» and a benchmark for Europe, noting that the small island’s commendable efforts have become a source of inspiration for countries and communities seeking solutions for a sustainable future.
