Inflation at 7.2% in December, but food accuracy is galloping

Oils, dairy products, bread and meat see the biggest increases

Inflation slowed to 7.2% in December based on the ELSTAT data released a short while ago, compared to 8.5% for November 2022.

At now average levels, inflation was set for 2022 at 9.6%, slightly lower than the relevant forecast in the budget (9.9%).

However, what is clear from the analysis of the data is that while there is a significant slowdown in the prices of energy products, there is a significant increase in the prices of basic goods, mainly those sold in supermarkets, especially in foodstuffs by 15.5%.

Compared to December 2021, the last month of the past year recorded appreciations:

  • 15,5% in Diet and non-alcoholic beverages
  • 11,3% in Durable goods-Household goods and services
  • 9,0% on Transport
  • 7,6% in Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants
  • 5,4% in Clothing and footwear
  • 5,2% in Other goods and services
  • 3,2% in Recreation-Cultural activities
  • 2,8% in Health
  • 2,5% in Housing
  • 2,5% in Alcoholic beverages and tobacco
  • 2,2% in Education

The scary revaluations are evident in a range of foodstuffs:

  • 25,6% in Dairy products and eggs
  • 21,7% in Oils and fats
  • 18,1% in Bread and cereals
  • 17,8% in Meat
  • 14% in Other foodstuffs
  • 13,1% in Vegetables (general)
  • 13,2% in Coffee-cocoa-tea
  • 10,4% in Mineral water-refreshments-fruit juices

In energy, behind the covert speculation of electricity providers at the expense of taxpayers, the price increases continue to gallop in other sectors:

  • 50% in Natural gas
  • 24,7% in Solid fuels

The transport however, they are a mirror of the fact that the accuracy of fuel continues to «drink the blood» of the citizens and especially of island Greece. The revaluations are shocking:

  • 36,7% in the Carriage of passengers by airplane
  • 32,9% in the Carriage of passengers by Taxi
  • 26,7% in the Carriage of passengers by vessel

Also noteworthy is the overall large price increases in the vehicle sector:

  • 11,7% in Car parts and accessories
  • 11,1% in Cars new
  • 10,1% in Mopeds-Motorcycles
  • 8,4% in Used cars
