Asperula taygetea Boiss. & Heldr., 1849
The genus includes over 180 species. Many are cultivated as ornamental plants throughout the world. Some of them are considered to have medicinal properties. (Asperula odorata, etc.)
Asparula of Taygetos is endemic to the South Aegean (western Crete, Kythira, Antikythira, southeastern Peloponnese). It blooms from April to June, climbing cliffs and rocky areas. It is classified as a rare plant (IUCN 1997) and is protected by Presidential Decree 67/1981.
Its name comes from the Latin asper = rough + the suffix -ula, which indicates a small female.
