On Sunday, July 10, 2022—after a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus—the traditional events of the sister cities of Karava, Cyprus, and Kythira took place. The Mayor of Karava, Mr. Nikolaos Hatzistefanou, and his wife, Maro, honored the events with their presence.
On the morning of Sunday, October 10,7, an Archiepiscopal Memorial Service was held for our Cypriot brothers who were killed during the Turkish invasion of 1974, as well as for those hanged on July 9, 1821, by the Turks, including Archbishop Kyprianos of Cyprus, at the Holy Church of St. Charalambos in Karava. This was followed by a memorial service and the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial of the Karava Community.
That same afternoon, the Mayor of Karava gave a lecture in the event hall of the Potamos City Hall on the topic “Cyprus’s Contribution and Karava’s Special Role in the Greek Revolution of 1821,” captivating the audience with his inspiring speech and the presentation of moving historical facts.
The events concluded with an exchange of gifts and good wishes between the two municipalities and with a heartfelt hope for the swift return of our displaced Cypriot brothers and sisters to their ancestral homes, which have been illegally occupied by Turkey for 48 years.
