The municipality of Chania is seeking solutions to the problem of waste management and, as part of the actions it has developed, is running an international tender with a budget of €587,000, excluding VAT, for the supply of suitable equipment for sorting bio-waste at source.
As Deputy Mayor for Sanitation Michalis Tsoupakis told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), «in the coming years, the main and most pressing issue for municipalities will be that of sanitation.
And we must address this issue through specific decisions, initiatives, and actions.».
Biowaste management
The tender for the supply of the appropriate equipment concerns three sub-projects.
The supply of closed brown plastic kitchen bins with lids, 10 and 50 liters, and the supply of brown plastic wheeled bins, 50 liters.
The supply of biodegradable 10-liter bags is also planned, as well as the supply of vehicles and other equipment required for the management of the program. .
«Our goal through this program is to remove food waste from green bins, while also managing waste from branches,» Mr. Tsoupakis told APE-MPE.
Removal of green bins
The need to procure the appropriate equipment for bio-waste management also arises from the fact that, according to a European Directive, municipalities must phase out green bins by 2030.

At the same time, amid the difficult economic climate, municipalities will face yet another obligation from 2022 onwards: the imposition of a landfill tax on waste.
For 2002, the fee for the municipality of Chania is estimated at €1.1 million and €1.5 million in total for the municipalities of the Regional Unit.
This fee will gradually increase each year, which is a cause for concern for municipalities seeking solutions to avoid increasing the fees paid by residents. .
In parallel with the program for the management of bio-waste in the municipality of Chania, another program is also underway, concerning the collection of printed paper.
