A veil of mystery covers the muffled sounds that were perceived in the area stretching from Milos to Chania in the first days of June. The phenomenon was also observed in Kythera, concerning the period 1-3 June and is limited to the sea area east of Monemvasia.
Windows “banging”, houses “dancing”
The reports from Chania are particularly alarming and according to the website zarpanews.gr, they speak of «squeaky shutters» and «dancing houses», as the following video attests.
Great upheaval was caused in the local community of Chania, with the website talking about terrified hotel customers.
Students recorded the tremors, what they told Kythera.News
Two students of the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Technical University of Crete recorded the phenomenon using the triangulation method. As reported by the zarpanews.gr, the students used data from two seismographs in Chania, one in Kythera, one in Antikythera and one in Velies in Laconia to calculate the location where the oscillations started.
As the zarpanews.gr, «the triangulation method assumes that multiple sensors record the passage of a wave (electromagnetic, sound, seismic, etc.) and, since the speed at which the wave propagates through each medium is known, the difference between the times it has passed through each sensor can be used to calculate the distance the wave has travelled to reach the sensor. If there are at least three recording instruments, then the point from which the wave started can be located with great accuracy. More sensors can increase the accuracy of the measurement. Essentially the same procedure is used to locate the epicentre in earthquakes.
However, Kythera.News contacted one of the students, who told us that the waveform on the seismographs does not indicate an earthquake. He even described the phenomenon as a pressure wave, with the cycle of the tremor continuously touching the circles of the seismographs, as shown in the geolocation/clapper crackle video in the atmosphere, which he and his fellow student created together.
The reports from Kythera and the possibility of military involvement
Full identification with the findings of the two students have the so-called Kytherion, who resides in Diakofti in an area that maintains visual contact with the horizon where the phenomenon occurred. Speaking to Kythera.News, this resident referred to a “shock wave” that came as a result of this particular phenomenon. According to existing data, the activity is limited to 25-30 nautical miles (about 50 km) northeast of Kythera.
All the testimonies so far refer to a phenomenon that has been observed in other years and which often coincides with the dates of military exercises in the region. However, no military unit around Chania has not confirmed the execution of military exercises on these dates, according to what was stated in zarpanews.gr the Deputy Governor of Chania, Nikos Kalogeris. For their part, the geologists do not advocate the occurrence of a natural phenomenon.
From the above, it seems that we are dealing with a phenomenon that is recurring but not fully defined in terms of the causes. And, according to what one of the students who carried out the research told us, there may be reports in the international literature linking the phenomenon to military firing of long-range weapons or to planes breaking the sound barrier, but in this case any conclusion risks being arbitrary.
