PRESS RELEASE - KYTHERA CITIZENS' MOVEMENT
At a recent information event in Logothetianika, the cardiologist Professor P.Vardas aptly referred to the industrial wind farms that threaten Kythera as the biggest disaster to befall the island since the Barbarossa massacre.
The RES companies, applying the favourable environment that the governments have created for the so-called “green development”, without even the most basic concern for the environment, the antiquities and the local communities, are indifferent to the next day of the island and its inhabitants in the face of their own over-profit.
But from very early on, the Kytherians united to defend the island and its character, their properties and their lives.
201 are finally the authorisations of residents and associations to the lawyer for filing appeals concerning the 3 new production licences of TERNA Group's interests. The island associations involved in the appeals are:
CITHRAIC FOUNDATION OF CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT, ASSOCIATION OF AGIAS PELAGIA, ASSOCIATION ‘’ORANGES OF CARAVA’’, ASSOCIATION OF POTAMOS, ASSOCIATION ‘’THE GUEST’’ OF AVLEMONAS, ASSOCIATION ‘’THE BEAUTIFUL CARAVAN’’, AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE OF POTAMOS, BEEKEEPING COOPERATIVE OF POTAMOS, HUNTING ASSOCIATION, CHOIR ‘’KEFTHOS’’, FRIENDS OF MUSEUMS OF CITHIRA
Along with the legal actions of the lawyer of the Municipality of Kythera and the Domestic Property, the Kytherians are united in defending the character of the island, and show in every way that they are not easy prey.
The number of residents is again large, and adds to the previous legal actions that had been taken regarding the previous production licenses to the companies of interest of the ELLAKTOR group and the KOPELOUSOS group.
In the recent interview of architect Dimitris Leventis on the «5 islands under threat of destruction». Dimitris Leventis, Vice President of the Architectural Heritage Council of the Hellenic Society for Environment and Culture said:
Really, the organization of the data, the data, the documents that we had, the research, the publicity of the problem, the archive that was made available to us, the support from and the Kythera Citizens' Movement, was all extremely important. I must admit that, in relation to the other four islands, the data we got from Kythera supported the general candidacy to a very great extent.
Kythera resists.
The Kytherians are an example for other endangered places, because they have both the will, the strength and the knowledge to fight together for their island.
