«A big thank you to the women and men of the fire department. They did a very important job all night long, especially the ground crews. We faced an extremely difficult fire under extreme conditions heat wave. The most nightmarish fires are those that occur in suburban forests. I consider it a positive development that, thank God, we have not had any loss of life so far and that the evacuation system worked flawlessly. »Our critical infrastructure held up,“ said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis immediately after the emergency meeting at the ”Olympus” mobile coordination center in Varibobi.
The prime minister noted, «From this point forward, work to assess the damage will begin immediately. Homes will be rebuilt, and the forest will grow back over time,» and added, «But the hardest part is still ahead of us. We still have a few more days of extreme heat; then the winds will begin, so I ask everyone to remain on high alert so that the damage caused from this point forward is as minimal as possible.».
Finally, the prime minister thanked the fire department, the police, and the volunteers who, as he said, dealt with an extremely difficult situation with such selflessness.
