The nutritional benefits of strawberries

Strawberry. The fruit that reminds us of spring and summer at the same time. And every time their season comes we wonder. How many to eat? Do they have any nutritional benefit;

From the distant past to the present

In the pharmacopoeia of ancient times, strawberries were used as a mild laxative, diuretic and astringent. In the traditional medicine of the West, strawberry is considered the medicine for the skin, especially for hair growth, for acne and chronic ulcer. Botanists of the time associated the consumption of fleshy fruits, such as strawberries, with the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

The nutritional value of strawberries in the modern diet

The caloric value of strawberries is too short in relation to its nutritional value. One cup of strawberries corresponds to 70 kcal approximately, as their average water content is 90% water and 10% of sugars (mainly fructose) and fibre.

Let's look at some of the main benefits of eating strawberries:

  • Strawberry is very rich in vitamin C, which is essential for tissue repair. This is why strawberries are also known for their healing properties. The consumption of eight strawberries is equivalent in vitamin C to an orange. Strawberries are also a very good source of vitamin E, vitamin A (carotene), B vitamins, folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iodine and magnesium. A multivitamin formulation of the few, then!
  • Strawberries are rich in polyphenols, substances known for their anti-cancer and their antioxidant properties. The polyphenols combined with vitamin C make it the most anti-cancer and antioxidant fruit.
  • So because of the polyphenols and potassium they contain, they offer cardioprotective action as they play an important role in regulating the blood pressure in a natural way.
  • The pectin contained in strawberries has been proven to significantly reduce the cholesterol in the blood.
  • Strawberry can prove to be an ally in the constipation due to its high content of edible (fibre) and water.

Ways of eating strawberries:

Apart from eating strawberries in the traditional way, there are many other ways of eating strawberries. alternative options so that it can be included in our daily diet and benefit from its many important benefits. Some of these options:

  • In smoothie
  • In fruit salads
  • At breakfast with oats as topping
  • In yoghurt
  • In healthy sweets making them even lighter!
