Daphne Petrohilos is an artist whose paternal family originated on Kythera but immigrated to East Africa, hence Daphne was brought up between Tanzania, Greece and London. She studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited extensively in the US, Great Britain, Ireland and in Europe.
Daphne came to visit Kythera for the first time in 1992. The island became her home base in between living abroad or in Crete, but has now been her permanent home for some years.
Daphne’s practice, which includes painting and landscape works, is best described in her own words as printed in the on-line art magazine Cassone, in 2014: «The main concerns I address in my art, are composition, competent use of materials, and narrative… My work is almost strictly figurative, I adore stories and things that ask for inner intelligence to unravel and feel part of».
