Two of the key members of the scientific team for the project «INNOVATIVE ACTIONS FOR THE PREVENTION OF FOREST FIRES IN KYTHIRA,» Dr. Gabriel Xanthopoulos, a researcher at the Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems of ELGO-Dimitra, and Dr. Miltiadis Athanasiou, an environmental scientist specializing in forest fires, spoke to Kythera.News as part of the raising awareness and educating citizens and institutions which took place on June 9 and 13 in Kythira.
The two scientists answered questions posed by Kythera.News regarding the project. More specifically, they discussed the prevention and suppression plan, the training of institutions, the community, and students, the documentation of buildings in the settlements, and the research data generated by the project.
The project is being implemented by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, in collaboration with the Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems of ELGO, «DEMETRA.» The project, funded by the Green Fund and private donors from Athens and Kythira, focuses on prevention and suppression, with an emphasis on educating the local community, through a broader strategic plan aimed not only at restoring but also at enhancing the environment and minimizing the human impact on it.
