The pilot program for the digital panic button app is launching; the app is installed on smartphones and alerts the police in cases of domestic violence.
The relevant amendment was submitted as part of the Ministry of Justice’s bill and will be voted on today during the plenary session of the Parliament.
The panic button sends a short text message (SMS) to the police, in cases of domestic violence involving a threat or danger to life or physical integrity, so that the police can intervene immediately.
The first participants in the program’s pilot phase will be women who are victims of domestic violence in Attica and Thessaloniki, who contact the local police authorities or a Counseling Center of the Network of the General Secretariat for Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality (G.G.D.O.P.I.F.) of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.
Following the conclusion of the pilot program, the «Panic Button» program will be evaluated by the relevant departments of the Ministries of Labor and Social Affairs and Citizen Protection.
