The life and the state of Panagopoulos with a €10,000 salary per month and a luxurious residence with a swimming pool

The president of the Greek Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, Yannis Panagopoulos, is under investigation for embezzlement and money laundering, with the case concerning the embezzlement of two million euros from national and European funds intended for educational programmes.

Yannis Panagopoulos completes 20 years at the helm of the General Confederation of Greek Workers this year, making him the longest-serving president in the history of the country's highest trade union body. Two decades of absolute domination of an institution that is supposed to represent hundreds of thousands of private sector workers.

At the same time, however, the lifestyle and developments around him seem to be far removed from the daily lives of the workers he is called upon to defend.

The president of the GSEE is being investigated for two felony offences, embezzlement and money laundering, according to information that has come to light. For some, the news came as a surprise; for others it came as a reinforcement of the chronic controversies surrounding the rift between the trade union leadership and the world of work.

According to Mega, Yannis Panagopoulos, who has not worked in the private sector for about 40 years due to his full involvement in trade unionism, allegedly has monthly incomes of up to or more than 10,000 euros. At the same time, the workers he represents have to survive on salaries of EUR 700 and EUR 800.

This picture is complemented by information about a luxurious house with a swimming pool in Gortynia, Arcadia, intensifying questions about how the profile of the trade unionist fits with that of the man of work.

The route of the

Yannis Panagopoulos' trade union career starts at the National Bank of Greece in the mid-1970s. He gradually climbed the rungs of the trade union hierarchy and in 2006 he was elected president of the General Confederation of Trade Unions (GSEE). From that point onwards, for many, the Confederation begins to drift further and further away from its base, losing credibility and social ground.

At the same time, the country is entering the harshest phase of its post-communist history: memoranda of understanding, wage cuts, collapse of collective agreements, soaring unemployment and generalised deregulation of the labour market. Expectations of the GSEE were high, but its leadership was accused of keeping a low profile, provoking anger in much of society.

On March 5, 2010, at the great strike rally, Yannis Panagopoulos was attacked by demonstrators and was taken away. On the same day, the late Manolis Glezos is targeted by the police, while the country is shaken by the attack in Marfin that claimed the lives of three people.

Panagopoulos was accused of acting more as a «negotiator» for the governments than as a lobbyist for the workers. Typically, in February 2025, when the country was «flooded» by rallies for the tragedy of Tempi, the GSEE refused to declare a strike.

Within the Confederation, a perpetual cycle of accumulated power prevailed, which led to the same result. The re-election of Panagopoulos as president over and over again. The GSEE congresses were dominated by tension and out-of-bounds arguments.

In 2024 he and the former General Secretary of the GSEE were indicted on charges of joint dishonesty with intent to defraud, for damage of more than 120,000 euros to the Confederation's resources. The Three-Member Court of Appeal of the Criminal Court of Appeal found them not guilty, but before the noise dies down, the heavy shadow of the charges from the Black Money Laundering Authority comes to cover the offices of the GSEE in Patission.
