It was not a proposal of the committee of experts to ban gatherings of more than 100 people, the professor of Microbiology clarified Alcibiades Vatopoulos - who is, after all, one of its members - commenting on the strange decision of its leader Hellenic Police. Speaking to SKAI, noted that in any case it is generally right to ban concentrations anyway in the midst of pandemic.
«I don't recall us discussing anything like that. I hear it from you» said the professor, who appeared to be surprised by the news.
The professor spoke about the concern that scientists are concerned about the mutations of coronavirus but also the images crowding. He did not even rule out the possibility of a third party lockdown but stressed that «it is not something that is immediate». According to Alk. Vatopoulos, there is a delicate balance between the need to move the economy and the health aspect and it becomes even more difficult with mutations.
As he said, extreme caution is required by citizens and good epidemiological surveillance of the situation «so that we know very quickly what is happening».
Alc. Vatopoulos stressed that neither has been requested nor has it been a question of not opening the Gymnasiums and Lyceums next Monday, without ruling out any such discussion in the future if the situation changes.
Specifically on the mutations, he explained that it is highly likely that the original strain will prevail as it seems to be more easily transmitted and that it is extremely important now to have rapid vaccination of the population.
