The Athens Prosecutor's Office opens a preliminary investigation after Yanis Varoufakis' statements about drug use in a podcast interview.
The investigation will examine whether the offence of inducing or advertising the use of drugs is established or whether any other criminal offence arises.
The former finance minister was asked by Gaia Mercuri and Dimitris Petrichos in a podcast interview if he has used drugs and he replied, «Of course, that was missing. I'm not like Bill Clinton who said “I don't inhale”. I'm also a bit boring...»,and then described the day he took ecstasy, saying: «I've taken ecstasy once and it was an amazing experience, until the day after. I had a migraine that was unbelievable and I never took it again. I don't know what they had given me, it was in Sydney and I remember it was a great time, it was at Mardi Gras in 1989. They had a big gig going on at the end of the parade, where you walked in - you paid a very large amount of money for the time - and you didn't know what show they were going to put on. It was Kylie Mignong, and in there I said, “Let's give it a try.” I remember dancing for 15-16 hours like nothing was wrong, but I suffered for a week afterwards and never went back.».
«For me, what was very pleasant and remains pleasant even though I don't find it anymore, no one gives it to me, is simple grass», Yanis Varoufakis continued.
The video with the above statements of Mr Varoufakis was forwarded to the prosecution by the EL.AS.
