The political decision taken by the government and the Regional Education Directorate (DDE) regarding the secondary school in Kythira has provoked strong reactions and criticism from the local community and teachers. According to reports over the last two months, the government has left the schools in Kythira without teachers in order to deal with the situation by imposing overtime and pressure on teachers.
Specifically, they attempted to transfer a newly appointed colleague from Korydallos to Kythira under a 1985 law concerning the jurisdiction of the prefect. Parents and students were threatened with consequences for their protest boycott.
The mobilization of ELME and the actions of the Parents' Association have intensified resistance to political intervention. Read the EAA announcement below.

The government's political choice – DDE of disruptive, anti-educational intervention in the Kythira high school shows that there is no bottom to the barrel.
Everyone on Tuesday, November 5, at 2 p.m. at the ELME mobilization at DIDE Piraeus
- They left the schools in Kythira without teachers.
- They pressured colleagues to work overtime in order to «cover up» the problem and divide it between middle school and high school.
- They sought to transfer a colleague from Piraeus A to Moulouchtos with a single phone call and against his will.
- When this tactic failed, they appointed (supposedly temporarily) a newly appointed colleague from Korydallos (from Piraeus A to Piraeus C!), taking advantage of a provision (as is well known, there are all kinds of anti-popular and anti-labor provisions in the laws) in 1566, a provision that has certainly never been applied.
- They threatened the high school students and their parents that they would all be marked absent due to the protest boycott carried out by students and parents.
- They attempted to intimidate the Parents' Association by requesting the election minutes in order to verify its legitimacy.
- They sent a patrol car to the school to heighten the climate of terror.
The list is endless. And the barrel of aggression has no bottom. In order to push through this miserable policy of mergers and the collapse of free public education, they have resorted to the familiar hysteria of disciplinary prosecutions and intimidation.
- Don't let it pass – Revoke the miserable compulsory transfer from Piraeus A to Kythira.
- To be covered IMMEDIATELY FILL ALL VACANCIES with mass permanent appointments – We do not succumb to pressure to work overtime – We call on ELME to declare strikes in such cases.
- The campaign of terror against teachers, parents, and students will not pass.

Illegal transfer of teacher to Kythira: Resistance and outcome from ELME
ELME announced today that the newly appointed teacher, who was forcibly transferred from Koudallos to Kythira, has returned to her original position. This decision, following a query from ELME Piraeus, is officially illegal, after confirmation from the ministry, with the clarification that the transfer of a teacher on probation is not permitted due to the mandatory two-year stay. Following a special invitation and public outcry, a substitute teacher was included in the recruitment for Kythira in the specialty PE 04.04. The struggle proved once again the importance of a strong union in defending teachers' rights.
See ELME's post on Facebook:
«Our newly appointed colleague for 2024, who was forcibly transferred to Kythira, thanks to the immediate and decisive actions of ELME, has now returned. A) In response to a question from ELME, the Ministry clarified that the transfer of a probationary teacher is NOT permitted, as the two-year mandatory stay requirement applies. However, this decision was not communicated to ELME Piraeus (!), which submitted the question, but to the DDG and PDE. This stance raises many questions. B) After the outcry, the specialty PE 04.04 was included in the Special Invitation for Kythira and a substitute was hired. Of course, even if no one had applied for Kythira, our colleague would have returned anyway, since the transfer was illegal, inhumane, anti-labor, and anti-educational. Once again, the struggle has borne fruit. With a strong union, we can defend our rights. An announcement will be issued by ELME.
