Today, 15 October, International Women's Day, I reflect on the times when women could not enjoy freedom, health care, education, careers, pensions, comforts, social benefits, recognition.
Really how much do Kythera owes to the contribution of women farmers to agricultural production and the rural economy! How much do we owe to those women who got up at dawn and set off for the field with a baby in their belly and another one in the «niaka» and baked in the sun during harvesting and threshing! What do we owe to these women who gave birth at home and got up to knead and go out to the field! What do we owe to these women who ensured an admirable self-sufficiency in their households!!! What do I owe to my farming grandmothers who provided for their household with their hard work, wheat, barley, oil, wine, milk, meat, flax, cotton, wool, bostanics, periwinkles and everything the household needed , in the hope that their children and grandchildren would live better!
