Thyroid function can be affected by toxic substances, and some of these toxic substances—which can cause hormonal imbalances—are found in a variety of products that we all have in ourhomes.
In a large-scale study involving more than 30,000 people, scientists found that more than 10% of people exposed to drinking water containing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) reported thyroid problems.
These are synthetic chemicals that cause long-term harm to the human body and persist in the environment for many, many years, creating even more problems.
These compounds do not break down easily, and in addition to thyroid disorders, they have been found to be linked to cancer, infertility, genetic abnormalities, and a weakened immune system.
Let's take a look at which items found in almost every home contain these «suspicious» chemicals—and most of which you would never even imagine could harm your thyroid.
Nonstick pans and other cookware
They are particularly popular because they don’t require scrubbing to clean, but they require great care, as the chemicals on their surface can leach into food and, consequently, into the body. If your nonstick cookware is scratched, replace it immediately. A healthy choice is cookware made of cast iron, enamel, glass, or stainless steel.
Powder
Household dust contains a multitude of chemicals that can cause various problems when they enter the body. These chemicals are released into the air from various products (personal care, household cleaning, construction, furniture, etc.) and end up in dust, on objects, and on the floor. Clean your home regularly with mild cleaning products and opt for a vacuum cleaner with eco-friendly filters.
Shampoo
Many shampoos and other personal care products now have a more sophisticated texture and a variety of scents, which is achieved by adding chemical ingredients. Opt for shampoos made with natural ingredients such as saponin or coconut.
Dental floss
Some dental flosses contain anti-stick chemicals to help the floss glide more easily between the teeth. Choose a dental floss that does not contain this substance.
Waterproof
Waterproof coats, rain boots, umbrellas, and other similar items contain hazardous chemicals due to their water-repellent properties. Opt for products made of polyurethane; a safe choice is clothing with a waxed outer surface that repels water and rubber boots.
Pizza boxes and fast-food packaging
Here's another good reason to avoid processed foods. Many packages are coated with nonstick chemicals to keep the fats from sticking.
Microwave Popcorn
The bag in which microwave popcorn is packaged has been found to contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). According to a study by UCLA, this acid can cause liver damage and negatively affect your immune system.
