The anniversary of the “No” was celebrated in Kythira with great solemnity and national pride, with the events held in Potamos and Chora serving as the focal point.
On the morning of Monday, October 28, our National Day, the day began with a thanksgiving service at the Holy Church of Ilaroti in Potamos. This was followed by a memorial service at the Memorial to General Panos Koronaios, in the village’s historic square, where the atmosphere was moving and filled with respect for the sacrifice of our ancestors.
Following the memorial service, a minute of silence was observed in honor of the heroes, while the Potamos Philharmonic Orchestra played our National Anthem, evoking a special sense of national unity and emotion. Wreaths were laid by Mr. Zacharias Souris, leader of the Largest Minority Group of the Municipality of Kythira, Mr. Anargyros Sofios, leader of the Minor Minority, Mr. Kostas Andronikos from the Local Community of Potamos, Mr. Manolis Anastasopoulos as a representative of the National Resistance, as well as students.
The event continued with the day’s commemorative speech, delivered by educator Ms. Stella Archimandriti, which focused on the ideals and values of the Epic of ’40, highlighting the timeless nature of the national struggle for freedom and dignity.
The festive celebrations concluded at the Historic River Square with poems and traditional dances performed by the students of the kindergarten and elementary school. Under the bright sun, the children paid their own tribute to our ancestors, reinforcing a sense of patriotic pride.
The Potamos Philharmonic accompanied the event with patriotic marches, lending a solemn tone to the day. A video of the event will be posted shortly, giving everyone the opportunity to experience the day’s unique atmosphere.
