Life Force: «Below the circumstances the Administration of the Region»

It is not completing critical projects, nor is it funding new ones.

The Regional Administration has proven to be up to the task in terms of financial management, with serious consequences for citizens’ wallets amid an unprecedented recession and pandemic. This was pointed out by the "Force of Life" party during the most recent Regional Council meeting, which focused on the financial results of the 3rdno Quarterly Report of the Region.

Specifically, the Regional Administration is either not moving forward critical projects that had been launched by the Life Force Administration, such as the public auction of the Faliro Bay Ecological Park. Or it blatantly violates the rules of good governance, as in the case of the 19-million-euro waterworks project in Kinetta, which was essentially through direct award without an open bidding process—citing alleged urgent circumstances even though the project design had been ready since March of this year— the Administration did not put it out to bid until eight months later (!), now in November, with the costs of this multi-million loss falling on the hard-pressed taxpayer…

In light of the discussion at the Regional Council meeting on Wednesday, November 25, *Dynamis Zois* pointed out that as early as April of this year, during the first phase of the pandemic, it had submitted a fully costed «COVID-19 budget» allocating 31 million euros for:

  • the relief for the most vulnerable groups from the consequences of the crisis,
  • the creation Regional Sampling Center (test) and
  • the promotion of culture and the domestic (and epidemiologically safe) Social Tourism.

The well-stocked coffers (cash on hand exceeding 250 million today) left by the management of Dynamis Zois, combined with the Region’s net annual revenue of 50 million and the possibility of securing funding through the Public Investment Program for projectsamounting to approximately €40 million per year, leave no room for excuses on the part of the current administration. It has an immediate obligation—not to a political faction but to the citizens—,

    1. to consistently complete the projects currently underway and
    2. to proceed with the planning and bidding process for many new infrastructure projects (flood control, drainage, road safety, etc.), improving citizens’ daily lives, and cultural projects.

During the same discussion, *Dynami Zois* pointed out that today, thanks to its own tenure in the administration, the Attica Region is a healthy organization, perhaps the strongest in the public sector, since, in addition to its cash reserves, it has an extensive technical program with reliable oversight mechanisms. Specifically, the Technical Program funded from its own resources increased sevenfold—from 15 million in 2014 to 95 million in 2019—despite the cries from the then-Opposition about «over-commitment» and the alleged promotion of projects beyond the financial capabilities of the Attica Region.

Unfortunately, instead of ensuring funding for projects, supporting local communities and small and medium-sized businesses, is focusing its efforts on channeling resources to various vested interests, at the expense of good governance, the environment, and the citizens.
