In an effort to highlight Turkish revisionism during the period 1973–2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presents 16 maps showing what Ankara—with or without Erdogan—is attempting to impose in the Aegean.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' announcement:
In an effort to help the general public gain a deeper understanding of Turkish revisionism, the attached maps illustrate, in a vivid and irrefutable manner, Turkey’s illegal, unilateral actions and claims.
The maps are based on the status quo established by the Treaties of Lausanne (1923) and Paris (1947).
Next, the Turkish claims are presented, as they began with the illegal licensing by the Turkish state-owned oil company (TRAO) to explore for oil deposits in areas of the Greek continental shelf in the Northern Aegean in 1973, including the attempt to shift responsibility for search and rescue operations in half of the Aegean Sea away from Greece in the 1980s, the ‘gray zones« theory in the 1990s, the escalation with new licenses in the Eastern Mediterranean, the adoption of the »Blue Homeland‘ as official doctrine, the «Turkish-Libyan memorandum,» and extend all the way to the Turkish theory regarding the demilitarization status of the Aegean islands.
The maps above document the extent of Turkish revisionism aimed at overturning the status quo, in violation of international law and the Law of the Sea, thereby threatening peace, security, and stability in our region.
