It presents its own account of the circumstances under which the event organized by the Kythira Association, which had been scheduled for July 25, 2026, at the Kythira High School, in a public announcement by the school’s principal, Eleni Megalokonou.
The statement was issued, as she notes, in response to rumors attributing responsibility for the cancellation to the school administration. Ms. Megalokonomou maintains that she did not refuse to grant use of the space, but requested that the required institutional procedures be followed first and that written assurances be provided regarding safety, fire safety, and the protection of school property.
According to her, a relevant document with the reference number 459/17-07-2026 It was sent to the Deputy Mayor for Education, but no response was received. Consequently, she attributes the cancellation of the event to the failure to complete the required procedures and not to her own refusal to cooperate.
The following is the statement from the principal of the Kythira High School, reproduced verbatim:
Restoring the Truth
In light of the cancellation of the event organized by the Kythira Association on July 25, 2026, at the Kythira High School, and the baseless rumors circulating in recentthat the school principal is to blame for this development, it is absolutely necessary to set the record straight and make the true facts known. Specifically, a few days before the canceled event, I received a phone call from a municipal employee and another individual who asked me to hand over the school key, on the orders of the deputy mayor for education, so that the event could take place. I was informed by another source that the event would essentially be a dance party with barbecues, etc. I must note here that while the municipality may grant the use of school facilities in accordance with the applicable legal framework, the principal is responsible for the safety and protection of school property. For this reason, the authorization must be granted in cooperation with and after informing the principal to ensure that safety rules are followed, school property is protected, and the use is consistent with the educational nature of the school. However, since I never received, either in writing or verbally, any notification from the competent official body, nor was I notified of any official decision regarding the granting of permission and the use of the school premises for this specific event, Being aware of my responsibilities and in order to safeguard the school grounds from any damage or loss of property, and to protect its prestige as a place of learning, education, and culture, as well as to ensure fire safety during the event, I sent a letter to the Municipality of Kythira (Deputy Mayor for Education) with reference number Prot. 459/July 17, 2026, in which I requested that the provisions of the law be implemented as a necessary prerequisite for the handover of the school keys and the holding of the event.
- The issuance of a decision by the competent municipal body approving the transfer of the school grounds.
- The person or entity that assumes responsibility for organizing the event.
- The planning and implementation of all required fire safety and security measures.
- Written undertaking to cover any damages
- Commitment to restore the venue to its original condition after the event. .
As is evident from my letter, I was simply asking for what should go without saying. This stance is in line with my institutional duties and should not be interpreted as personal opposition or a refusal to cooperate. However, instead of a response, I was met with complete silence. .
In conclusion, the cancellation of the event is a consequence of the failure to follow the prescribed procedures and is not the fault of the principal, who is required to act in accordance with the law and in the best interests of the school she serves . The truth is best served by a full presentation of the facts, not by shifting blame. For this reason, all parties involved are called upon to demonstrate due responsibility and to present the actual facts accurately and with respect for the institutions. The school belongs to the community but, first and foremost, serves the children. Protecting its mission and history is the responsibility of us all. The school administration will continue to act consistently in accordance with the law, with a sense of responsibility and love for the students, and with respect for the local community. .
Sincerely, Director Eleni Megalokononomou
