In an atmosphere of deep emotion and religious devotion, the celebration of the Holy Epiphany took place today at noon at the port of Ammos Square in Kythira. The ceremony of the Blessing of the Waters drew a large crowd of faithful, who braved the cold to attend this important religious celebration.
This year's ceremony was particularly moving, as it included a tribute to the late President of the Local Community, Kosmas Tzortzopoulos, who had made sure to buy gifts for the children of the community before his death. The gifts were distributed to the children after the ceremony, in a moment that filled those present with feelings of sadness but also of honor for the deceased.
The Holy Cross was thrown into the sea by priest Petros Mariatos, in the presence of residents and visitors who rushed to wish for a good year.
Despite the cold, several daring swimmers plunged into the icy waters to catch the Cross, following the custom.
