The act.
On May 26, shortly after 8:00 p.m., a Lufthansa plane is flying from Berlin to Munich with 164 passengers on board, under hostage conditions. The terrorist ordered the pilot to crash the plane into Munich’s Allianz Arena during the Germany – England match, which is being watched live by 70,000 fans. The German government is immediately notified and dispatches two fighter jets to monitor the situation from close range and await further instructions.
The trial.
We are in the courtroom. The defendant appears wearing an Air Force uniform. He is charged with the deaths of all 164 passengers, following the firing of a rocket that brought down the hijacked aircraft—an act carried out solely on his own initiative and not on the orders of a superior. The presiding judge enters the courtroom and addresses the audience directly. The hearing begins. The show begins.
The dilemmas.
Who gave a mere representative of the German state the right to kill the few in order to save the many? Does the court have the appropriate legal tools to fairly judge his conscious decision to act on his own initiative in this way? What code of honor and what sense of justice prompted him to take action? Who decides that the so-called ’lesser of two evils« constitutes the measure of our morality? What is just? And what is unjust? National hero or murderous tyrant? The numbers, the correlations, the calculations, and the weighing of human souls have been hovering over the courtroom for some time, dominating everyone’s thoughts. The hearing has concluded. The jury now deliberates on the final verdict.
The decision.
The audience members have their say. They are the jurors in the trial they have just watched, and they are called upon to respond to its moral dilemmas. They will decide, through a live vote, whether the defendant is innocent or guilty. Will they decide as potential perpetrators or as potential victims? No one can know that.
