In Athens, hosted by SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, the 6th European Forum of Left, Green and Progressive Forces, which this year is entitled: «For peace, social and climate justice», according to a statement by SYRIZA-PS.
The main political debate, which will be addressed by the President of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, will take place today 21/10 at 20:00 (hybrid) with the participation of party leaders and important political personalities, including Martina Anderson, representative of the Irish Sinn Féin in Europe, Heinz Bierbaum, President of the Party of the European Left, Udo Bullmann, SPD MEP and former President of the European Parliament. President of the Socialists & Democrats Eurogroup, Yolanda Díaz, Minister of Labour of Spain, Mary Lou McDonald, President of Sinn Féin, Anna Pic, National Secretary in charge of the European Section of the French Socialist Party, Stefanos Stefanou, Secretary General of AKEL and Aurélie Trouvé, President of the Assembly of the Alliance of Progressive Forces in France (NUPES), chaired by the Forum's coordinator, Pierre Laurent.
In addition, the Forum includes three major thematic debates on the issues of solidarity, the climate crisis and Europe's social and ecological orientation, war, peace and a new architecture for collective security, while a number of other workshops and assemblies on individual policy issues will take place throughout the three days.
The work of the Forum will open today, Friday 21/10 at 14:30, with a greeting, among others, by the Secretary of SYRIZA - PC, Rania Svingos, while at the close of the work on Sunday 23/10 the Declaration of the Forum will be adopted, with the main conclusions and the next possible steps of joint action of the progressive forces.
In the framework of the Forum, SYRIZA Progressive Alliance is organizing on Saturday 22/10 at 18:30 a debate on “The future of Europe: Democratic or Dystopian?”. Participants will be Yannis Bournous (SYRIZA PS MP), Helmut Scholz (Die Linke MEP, Germany), Marilena Koppa (Associate Professor of Comparative Politics at Panteion University, former MEP), Raffaella Bolini (Associazione Ricreativa e Culturale Italiana - ARCI, Italy). Moderated by Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou (MP (SYRIZA MP, former Minister).
The European Forum was held for the first time in 2017 and has since been repeated annually in different countries. It is a major pan-European event, bringing together politicians, trade unionists, activists, artists, artists, intellectuals and representatives of think-tanks and civil society organisations. Its aim, as noted in the communication, is to identify areas of common intervention and action by the broader progressive political and social forces on the major challenges facing European societies, always respecting different traditions and approaches.
«Especially the current situation, as determined by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the war, but also its consequences on the lives of millions of European citizens, combined with the multi-level crisis, makes the importance of this meeting even greater, so that the progressive forces can respond effectively to the historic challenges for peace and collective security of the people of the continent and to the global threats affecting Europe and the world», the statement of SYRIZA-PS said.
The 6th European Forum will take place at the Serafio Centre of the Municipality of Athens (19 Echelidon & 144 Piraeus, Athens).
