“The EU co-funded FUTURAL programme was launched in June 2023 to empower rural areas in Europe, which face complex challenges such as youth exodus and an ageing population.FUTURAL aims to strengthen the resilience, sustainability and connectivity of these areas, improving the quality of life of their inhabitants. It will implement seven Digital Smart Solutions in five areas, such as circular bio-economy, crisis resilience and lifelong learning, with the collaboration of 21 partners from ten EU countries. In addition, FUTURAL involves more than 50 policy makers in the development of policies aimed at achieving the future CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) objectives on Smart Villages.
The Kythira Foundation for Culture & Development (KIPA), through the FUTURAL Programme, is taking action to address the exodus of young people from the island. By providing online training, it enhances the skills of residents, while through an eGovernment platform it enables local decision makers to use data to improve mobility through machine learning and the use of AI. It creates an efficient system while promoting the island's cultural heritage.
“Promoting the growth and modern development of rural areas has become more important than ever,” says George Kasimatis, President of the Kytheraikos Foundation for Culture & Development. “Unfortunately, rural areas are often neglected, with attention and funding mainly focused on cities. The CFS with the FUTURAL programme aims to bridge this gap. Seven digital solutions will be introduced to address the needs of rural communities such as Kythera in order to enhance the skills of residents. These solutions will be accessible through an interactive platform, allowing the wider European community to interact, highlighting cultural heritage and enhancing quality of life.”
