In a tremendous fight that captivated everyone, the Lefteris Petrounias won third place in the rings event, behind the Chinese, Liu Yang and Yoo-hoo. Petrounias, who was defending his gold medal from the Rio Olympics, executed a flawless program but a slight instability in his exit deprived him of something better than third place.
The race ended in an explosion of emotion, with Petrounias kissing the national flag and the winner, Liu Yang, bursting into tears.
This was the 13th medal for Greek gymnastics since the revival of the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.
