Spyros Livanos: «Beheading» of the Minister of Rural Development

The reason was the statement of the mayor of Sparta, who in the meeting of February 2 for the compensation of ELGA to those affected by the frost, in the presence of the minister, said that New Democracy won, then, the elections because it was distributing money with the scoop to the fire victims of Ilia.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis contacted the minister by phone, asking him to explain his non-reaction and the latter admitted that he should have handled the situation differently, while he put his resignation at the disposal of the Prime Minister.

In particular, the Prime Minister's Press Office in a statement, notes: «The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, contacted the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Spilios Livanos and his asked for an explanation for his reaction to the unacceptable report of the mayor of Sparta Mr. Doukas for the deadly fires of Ilia in 2007. Ο minister admitted that he should have reacted differently and placed his resignation at the disposal of the Prime Minister. Mr Livanos» resignation was accepted by the Prime Minister. The new Minister of Rural Development and Food will be announced in the coming hours.".

The incredible incident

At the meeting on 2 February in Sparta for the compensation of ELGA to those affected by the frost, in the presence of the Minister of Rural Development and Food Spilios Livanos, Petros Doukas appears incredibly cynical, boasts of the achievements of himself and the Karamanlis government in the deadly fires of 2007 and gives lessons to the minister.

For the record, in the fires of 2007, the prefecture of Ilia had suffered 49 deaths - a total of 84 - and had been destroyed. In 2021, the prefecture burned again, fortunately this time with no casualties, from a fire that should have been stopped immediately after its outbreak in Ancient Olympia. Instead, it even went so far as to burn the neighbouring Gortynia after a week. Neither 15 years ago, nor last year, the New Democracy government did not advance any substantial work for development and support for the country and the affected people.
