The head of the municipal faction «All Together, Kythera - Antikythera», Zacharias Souris, expresses his support to the Presidents of the Communities of Kythera and Antikythera, in a statement on Tuesday 19 May 2026, stressing that their protests reflect the real situation experienced by the local communities.
According to the party's statement, the Presidents' public statement cannot be treated either as hyperbole or as political expediency. On the contrary, it is an expression of the daily pressures faced by villages, especially when elected community representatives are called upon to manage problems without the necessary means, staff, tools and resources.
Mr.Souris notes that when the Presidents reach the point of issuing a joint public statement, the Municipal Authority must stop underestimating their voices and listen to the reality they bring from the local communities.
Here is the relevant statement:
DECLARATION OF SUPPORT FOR THE PRESIDENTS OF THE COMMUNITIES
The public position of the Community Presidents is neither an exaggeration nor a political expedient. It is the real picture that the local communities of our villages experience on a daily basis.
When elected Presidents, people who are beside the problems of residents every day, go so far as to issue a joint public statement, then the Municipal Authority must stop underestimating the voices of the communities and finally listen to reality.
Communities cannot function without resources, without staff, without basic tools and without essential support. It is not possible that Presidents are called upon to deal with village problems on a daily basis and at the same time are left alone, without resources and without the possibility of direct intervention even in the simplest issues of daily life.
I fully support the right of Presidents to demand the obvious for the local communities they represent. The strengthening of the Communities is not “thanks” to the Municipal Authority. It is an institutional and moral obligation to the residents and a basic requirement for a municipality that operates in a balanced, fair and respectful manner to each community.
The Municipal Authority should, instead of treating the Communities as annoying voices, proceed immediately to meaningful cooperation, dialogue and real support for the Presidents and local communities.
The times of silence are over. Local communities demand respect, equality and a meaningful presence of the Municipality in every village.
Because without strong communities, there cannot be a strong municipality.
