As part of the arrest in the act, seven police officers were arrested who were involved in the incident in Perama where, following a high-speed car chase and shots fired at him, the driver lost his life.
The seven were arrested on charges of first-degree murder and are expected to be brought before the prosecutor this afternoon.
It all started in the Agios Ioannis Renti area, where the vehicle, which was spotted by a DI.AS team, had a broken window (a sign of a break-in), which is why it was deemed suspicious and a police check was ordered.
At that point, on orders from the Emergency Operations Center, additional backup forces rushed to the scene to conduct the stop, but as soon as the vehicle saw the police officers, it accelerated and fled.
As stated in the Hellenic Police announcement, the car was spotted again in the Aigaleo area, and police officers pursued it to the Perama area, where it was stopped by an oncoming vehicle (a bus). In an attempt to escape, the suspects reversed and rammed into five motorcycles belonging to the DI.AS. units, injuring a total of seven police officers.
The police officers fired their weapons in an attempt to stop the vehicle, resulting in the fatal injury of the young Romani man who was driving and the injury of one of the passengers, who was transported to a hospital and is in stable condition. The third person who was in the vehicle fled and is being sought.
The Hellenic Police announcement makes no mention of weapons or gunfire on the part of the individuals in the vehicle.
