An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck early Tuesday morning (Nov. 11) off the coast of Antikythira, 301 kilometers from Athens.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the sea 67 km southwest of Antikythira and was felt throughout the wider region. The focal depth was 25.2 km.
The president of the OASP, Professor of Geology Efthymios Lekkas, struck a reassuring tone.
«The good news is that an earthquake like this shouldn’t worry us at all and isn’t likely to be followed by further activity—that is, many aftershocks,» he said in an interview with ERT News.
«It’s an event that came and went. To put it simply, it’s an earthquake along the Hellenic Arc—precisely where the European and African tectonic plates essentially converge,» the professor added.
