The retro magic of Kythira with footage from 1966 (video)

The sail to Tsirigo, the settlement of Araia, the entrance to Mylopotamos, the shots of the Venetian Castle in Kato Chora and the Venetian element in the traditional buildings of Chora, with the donkeys and the peddlers in the narrow streets, make up a scene of nostalgia on a black and white background.

A rare video of archival footage with images from the Kythera of that time, published by the website anagnostic.org.

The text states:

«The film opens on board with the filmmaker recording the mountain ranges of Laconia from the deck of a ship bound for Kythera. Passing by the Cape Malea close-up on the chapel of Agios Georgios and then to the strong waves of the sea in the Myrtoo Sea from some porthole on the boat.

Now we are probably in the settlement of Araion and perhaps the filmmaker is giving us shots of his traditional village Mylopotamos with its bell tower Saint Charalambos rising proudly. In the rest of the film, the filmmaker drives along a dirt road, taking shots from the route to Milopotamos and from the entrance of the village with its picturesque stone-built houses.

Next, distant shots of the Lower Country with the ruins of the Venetian castle located near Milopotamos.

The film closes with shots of the everyday life of the inhabitants, presumably in the Country, where we can see the architectural marriage of the mansions with traditional elements from the Aegean Sea, with the Venetians.»
