On Monday, volunteers from the Kythera Green Citizens’ Initiative carried out their third cleanup of the main road, this time from the Mylopotamos intersection to the Fratsia intersection; A fourth cleanup will follow on December 9. The results are noteworthy: eight large bags of trash were collected from both sides of the road over a distance of less than two kilometers.
A rough analysis of the types of waste yields the following approximate figures:
- 25% plastic water bottles
- 25% metal beer and soft drink cans
- 15% Tobacco products and cigarette butts
- 10% coffee containers
- 10% Food Packaging
- 15% Other Miscellaneous
In other words, at least 85% of the trash littering the sides of Kythira’s main street is due exclusively to the thoughtlessness of seasonal visitors who, without a second thought, throw their trash out the window.
