The number of new cases of Covid-19 in Europe may have fallen last week for the first time in more than a quarter, but deaths continued to rise, according to WHO data released today.
In total almost Four million cases were recorded in the world during the past week and claimed the lives of nearly 60,000 people, the World Health Organization said.
Η Europe, which yesterday, Tuesday, saw the total number of infections exceed the threshold of 15 million, remains the most affected region in the world.
Last week, these numbers accounted for 46% of the world's new cases and 49% of deaths, according to the agency's weekly epidemiological update.
With 1.84 million new cases, the pressure remained high in Europe, but the WHO stresses that «last week, for the first time in more than three months, the region recorded a 10% drop in the number of weekly cases».
However, more than 29,000 deaths were recorded on the European continent during this period, an increase of 18% compared to the previous week.
In the Americas, the second most affected region, the number of cases increased by 40%, with over 1.45 million new cases. More than 19,100 people ended up in the past week.
The only region that recorded a decrease in the number of new cases and deaths last week was Southeast Asia.
More than 1.3 million people have died and more than 55 million have been infected since the virus emerged in China late last year, according to a French news agency count from official sources.
