Greek theater is poorer for it as of today, as the great actress Maya Lyberopoulou has passed away at the age of 81.
Maya Lyberopoulou was born in 1940 in Athens and attended the Law School of the University of Athens. At the same time, she studied acting at Karolos Koun’s Art Theater. After graduating, she remained at Koun’s side as his artistic collaborator until 1970. She lived in France for a long time, where she studied film.
Upon returning to Greece, she continued her artistic career by collaborating with the National Theater, the Art Theater, and other theater companies, taking on major and demanding roles. Her contributions to theater are exemplified by the productions «Angels in America’ (2010), »Mourning Becomes Electra« (2013), »Uncle Vanya« (2009), and »The Vacation Trilogy« (2011). She served as artistic director of the Patras Municipal Regional Theater in the late 1980s.
